В 1979 окончил актерское отделение факультета драматического искусства ЛГИТМиКа (сейчас Санкт-Петербургская Академия Театрального Искусства), мастерская Аркадия Кацмана и Льва Додина. С 1979 года — актер Санкт-Петербургского Государственного Малого Драматического театра, затем — актер Творческого объединения «Арт-Питер». В 2003 году поставил и сыграл с актрисой и продюсером Ольгой Обуховской спектакль «Вацлав Нижинский. Повенчанный с Богом» по дневникам гениального русско-польского танцовщика. В 1996 году Сергею Бехтереву было присвоено звание Заслуженного артиста РФ.
